A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Families,

This past week was filled with both creativity and appreciation at Bush Hill!  First, I want to congratulate all of our students who participated in the Edison Pyramid Art Show on Thursday night! It was a joy to see the hallways adorned with the incredible artwork our students have created throughout the year. A huge thank you goes to our dedicated art teachers, Ms. Sturges and Ms. Hyatt, who guided and inspired our young artists. Their passion and commitment truly shine through in the students' work. Student artists who had work displayed include: Matthew M.E., Austin C., Sonia Z., Alazar B., Noah S., Aviya K., Karam W., Ellarene L., Annette B., Diego F., Eleanor B., Jackson M., Ariella KC, Isabella RR, Sydney L., Kiera G., Evelyn M., and Maita M.

We want to express our sincere gratitude to the PTA for organizing a wonderful Staff Appreciation Week! Our teachers, staff members, and administrators were deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support from our school community. The thoughtful notes, delicious treats, and heartwarming gifts brought smiles to everyone's faces all week long. Thank YOU for thanking us!

Just a reminder, spring SOL testing has begun for grades 3-6. To ensure your child performs their best, please encourage them to get a good night's sleep before their test day and eat a healthy breakfast in the morning. A well-rested and fueled student is a confident and prepared student!

Thank you for your continued partnership in making Bush Hill a truly special place to learn and grow.

Welcoming Our New Parent Liaison

Hello Bush Hill Family,

As I continue to settle in, I wanted to THANK everyone for the WARM WELCOME and bright SMILES I have received. I am very excited to be here and I'm really looking forward to creating a positive impact for our students and their families.

A little bit about me:

My name is Dimaye or Ms. Dima. I have been married for 13 years, have two daughters Arianna and Annalis who are part of the Forestdale Family, and unfortunately, we recently lost our furry best friend, KANO “Mi Viejito” our 13.5 year-old German shepherd. I was originally born in Puerto Rico and moved to the states (Buffalo, NY GO BILLS! I am a huge fan) with my family when I was 10 years old. Just like many students and families that come to the USA, we had no family here, we didn't know English and had to start from zero. Because of this, I feel I can relate to families and their struggles to become established, find resources and feel like their children are welcomed and safe, so I get the importance of creating a positive impact for students and their families from the second they walk into our doors.

I am fluent in both English and Spanish and I have a background in healthcare; I have a bachelor’s in healthcare management and I'm currently almost at the finish line with my Master of Public Health.  While pursuing my education, I have had the ability to work with immigrant and refugee families as well as many underserved local communities, as my husband has been in the Air Force for 17 years and we have moved from coast to coast. Being a Military Family (something I am very proud of), has also allowed me to connect to and orient new military families in our schools. During the past 13.5 years my career opportunities have always allowed me to connect families and their children with not only educational resources but with medical resources, social workers, local food pantries, shelters, helped families seek employment opportunities among other needed resources or tasks.

Once again, I am excited to be here and truly look forward to working with you and making a positive and lasting impact on our Bush Hill families. I will be here Tuesday – Friday 8:45AM to 1:45PM, please feel free to stop by room D3 and say Hello 😊

From The Health Room

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site  on  the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Families,

It's been another exciting week at Bush Hill Elementary! Here are some highlights from the past few days:

  • Kindergarten Orientation: We welcomed our newest students and their families to Kindergarten Orientation last week! It was a wonderful opportunity for rising Kindergarteners to explore their future classrooms, meet our teachers, and get a taste of what their school year will be like.
  • Second Grade Adventures: Second graders had a jam-packed week filled with learning and exploration. They embarked on a fascinating field trip to the Natural History Museum, where they were able to see incredible exhibits and learn about the natural world. Back in the classroom, they continued their geometry project-based learning unit, applying their knowledge in creative and engaging ways.
  • STEAM Power in 6th Grade: Our 6th graders delved into the world of nuclear power during their STEAM class. They were fortunate to have a guest speaker share their expertise and spark curiosity about this important scientific topic.

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the families who volunteered their time and helped make our Spring Book Fair a success last week. Your contributions are invaluable in supporting our school's literacy initiatives.

Thank you for your continued support!

Community Peer Preschool Program

Bush Hill is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program next fall. Our school piloted this program during this school year and are excited to expand this program for the 2024-25 school year. The community peers program provides opportunities for students with developmental delays to participate in integration activities with typically developing peers from our community in the same classroom. It can provide young children with a more stimulating environment, teach skills for coping with different situations, and provide the opportunity to learn appropriate social skills.

Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers, who are age 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs.

If your preschool-aged child will be 3 ½ by September 30, 2024, and you would be interested in having them participate in this half-day program, please contact the Bush Hill Main Office to complete and a return a form by May 9, 2024. Through a lottery process, we will identify potential community peers to invite to a playdate which will take place in late May. This playdate will be an opportunity for our staff to observe the interactions of our current preschool students with potential community peers. We will utilize information from our observations to select students to participate in this program.

Bush Hill Community Peers Program Information

All children learn through their play. Intellectual growth occurs in a social context, influenced strongly by the quality of social interactions. The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and preschoolers with special needs.

The preschool program will offer community peers for preschool-aged children. This project will provide an opportunity for the preschoolers with special needs to work and play on a regular basis with typically developing preschoolers from the community. The community children participating in this project have the unique opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with the school’s preschoolers. The school’s preschoolers will in turn benefit from being with community peers who model age-appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

Facts about the Early Childhood Special Education Program:

  • We use a child-centered approach to learning.
  • We follow a daily routine that includes circle, centers, story-time, small group, music, art, and outside play.
  • Children attend either a morning or afternoon session.
  • Sessions are three hours and fifteen minutes long, Monday through Friday.
  • There are up to eight children with special needs in each class.
  • Classes are staffed by an early childhood special education teacher and a full-time instructional assistant.

Community Peer Models Must:

  • Be at least 3 and ½ years old by September 30 of the school year they are entering.
  • Be completely toilet trained.
  • Reside within Fairfax County.

Please note that transportation and lunch will not be provided by the school system and must be provided by the family. If at any time, the experience is not mutually beneficial for both the community peer and the students with special needs, the preschool staff reserves the right to reconsider a community peers’ placement in the program.

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Families,

This week has been a whirlwind of activity here at Bush Hill, and I wanted to take a moment to share some of the highlights with you.

Last week, I was able to visit with several current 3rd grade classes to share about my recent trip to several of our country's National Parks! Did you know that 4th Graders across the country are eligible for a FREE National Parks pass? You can apply for your current or rising 4th grader to have a pass through this website. This initiative aligns perfectly with our Earth Day focus on appreciating the outdoors and being responsible stewards of our environment. We encourage you to take advantage of this incredible pass when your child is eligible!

We were honored to welcome Dr. Michelle Reid, the Division Superintendent, to our school today. Dr. Reid enjoyed meeting with our students and staff, and we were thrilled to showcase the wonderful things happening in our classrooms. Together, we visited a variety of classes to see our language arts instruction in action. We also had the opportunity to visit our beautiful pollinator garden while our 6th graders worked on caring for it and we learned alongside our kindergartners about the proper way to plant pumpkin seeds. It was inspiring to see their curiosity and enthusiasm for gardening!

Looking ahead, we are excited to host Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday of this week! This event is a fantastic opportunity for our rising kindergartners and their families to get acquainted with our school, meet our teachers, and learn about the exciting adventures that await them in kindergarten. If you know of a family with a rising kindergartner, please encourage them to join us at 6:00 pm at Bush Hill.

Thank you for your continued support of our school community.

Order Today! SEL Screener Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in March. This survey provides updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via mail.

For more information about the screener, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Families,

This week at Bush Hill Elementary has been a whirlwind of exciting events that showcased our vibrant school community and the incredible talents of our students and staff.

A Steller Spectacle:  Recapping the Solar Eclipse Festival!

This past Monday, April 8th, Bush Hill took to the skies (safely, of course!) for our unforgettable Solar Eclipse Festival! This event wouldn't have been possible without the incredible collaboration of our dedicated staff and enthusiastic families. We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped organize and volunteer – your efforts created a truly memorable experience for our students. Students were able to witness this celestial phenomenon using a variety of safe viewing tools they crafted themselves during STEAM class sessions leading up to and following Spring Break. Additionally, each student received a pair of certified eclipse glasses to use during the event and keep as a special memento.

A huge shout-out goes to our amazing STEAM teacher, Mrs. Blackburn, for her visionary planning and for leading this impactful learning experience.  We are so proud of our students for their enthusiasm and engagement during the eclipse!

Celebrating Our Diversity at Community Night

Last Thursday, we were thrilled to host our annual Community Night! It was a truly special evening where over 27 families and staff members, representing an amazing 20 different countries, came together to celebrate our rich diversity. The night was filled with joy as we enjoyed traditional dances from Ecuador/Bolivia, Ethiopia, and the Philippines. The aroma of delicious food from around the world filled the air, and informative displays provided a glimpse into different cultures.

We received fantastic feedback from the many students and families who attended. A huge thank you goes to the dedicated planning committee for their tireless efforts in making Community Night such a success!

Odyssey of the Mind Team Shines at State Level

We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Odyssey of the Mind team recently competed at the state level competition! Their hard work and creativity paid off, as they secured an impressive 2nd place finish in their division, qualifying them for the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. Team members include Finn Gilkes, Mark See, Ryan Boriso, Elisa del Mundo, Ellie Shanks, and Aaron Ruf. The team was coached by Heidi Hess and Stephanie See. While the team has chosen not to travel for the World Finals, their achievement is truly remarkable. This is a testament to their dedication, problem-solving skills, and teamwork.

Our deepest gratitude goes to the team's coaches and our school coordinator, Maria Mylnar, whose guidance and support made this incredible journey possible.

Chess Team Takes Third!

Bush Hill's Chess Team had a fantastic showing at Best Chess's Annual Scholastic Area-Wide Tournament in Gaithersburg on Saturday, April 6th. They achieved a commendable 3rd place finish overall! Team members include Declan Nolan, Isaac Autry, Mason White, Nathan Haug, Azeem Tyabji, Jacey Chang, John Syphrit III, Brianna Postigo-Duran, and Everett Suarez. We also want recognize student Nathan Haug who earned an impressive 3rd place finish in their category. Congratulations to the entire Chess Team on this well-deserved recognition!

I look forward to sharing more of Bush Hill's exciting news with you in the weeks to come. As always, we value your continued partnership in fostering a vibrant learning environment for our students.

Physical Education News

We wanted to take a moment to thank you for your ongoing support as we wrapped up the FCPS Safe Routes to School Bike Safety Unit last quarter for students in Kindergarten through Sixth grade.

During the unit, students learned important skills such as how to ride a bike, proper helmet fitting, performing the ABC quick bike check, and the significance of bike safety. Additionally, we covered topics like road rules, the benefits of biking for transportation and health, as well as the joy of lifelong physical activity. We were proud to see our students mastering hand signaling, biking etiquette, and for many, learning to ride a bike for the first time.

Looking ahead to the 4th quarter, we are excited to announce that our focus will shift to Volleyball, Soccer, and Outdoor Pursuits.

Please take note of the following important dates:

National Walk/Bike To School Day: May 8

Field Day coming in June! Date will be shared soon.

Stay tuned for more information about these upcoming events. Thank you again for your continued partnership in supporting your child's physical education journey.

Warm regards,

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Community,

Happy First Day of Spring! There are lots of things to celebrate this week as we prepare for Spring Break.

Last week, Ms. Gomes attended the Springfield Area Band Concert at Lewis High School. Several of our students and our band directors participated in this concert, which was a culmination of months of practice! Ms. Gomes shared that it was evident that each student poured their heart and soul into their instruments and mastering the challenging pieces they performed. Their teamwork, focus, and musicality were a joy to witness. A huge part of our students' success goes to our band teacher, Mr. Sorenson. His skillful instruction was instrumental (pun intended) in preparing our students for this performance. Congratulations to the following students who performed in this concert:  Eleanor Bates, Joshua Giles, Aaron Ruf, Alan Cheshmedjiev Caleb Foerst, Diego Funes, Ephratah Hulunem, Eric Araya-Porras, Helen Beyene, Isabella Menendez, Katherine Martinez, Katherine Currence, Olivia O'Grady, Cole Ratzer, Aman Tesfayesus, and Angela Chen.

Ms. Blackburn, our STEAM teacher, has been working with students to clean up our garden beds and prepare our pollinator garden for spring. We are already starting to see plants grow and we love that our students are continuing to contribute to the beautification of our school grounds - while learning about the plant life cycle! Ms. Blackburn is also busy preparing our students for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th. Students are learning about the solar eclipse in her classroom each week and preparing tools to safely view the eclipse. We are looking for volunteers to help facilitate our Solar Eclipse Festival on April 8th. Please be sure to sign up here. You can also help our students enjoy the eclipse by sending in any shoe boxes you have laying around the house!

Last week, we recognized all of our Odyssey of the Mind teams and their members which contained a typo. I apologize and want to recognize Everett Suarez for his participation in Bush Hill's Odyssey of the Mind program this year!

I hope you all have an enjoyable spring break!

The bricks will be placed there among the other legacy bricks. We have two brick options to choose from. Bricks purchased now until May 24, 2024, will be laid in late summer 2024. Bricks purchased after May 24th, 2024, will be laid by Spring of 2025. All profits raised will be used to support professional development for staff, student events, materials and supplies for Bush Hill ES.

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Families,

This past Saturday, Ms. Welsh and I were able to attend the Odyessy of the Mind tournament that was held at Discovery Elementary School and WIlliamsburg Middle School in Arlington. We were so excited to support the EIGHT teams that represented Bush Hill! Odessey of the Mind teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem solvers. Each team works for months to prepare a solution to a long-term problem. During the competition, they share their solution to the long-term problem and also work as a team to solve a "spontaneous" problem. This was the first time since I became principal that Bush Hill has participated in Odyessy of the Mind - and I hope that it is something that continues for many years to come! Parent Maria Mlynar brought the idea of forming Odyessy of the Mind teams to me and the Bush Hill PTA earlier this school year and worked very hard to coordiante both student and coaching volunteers. We are so grateful to Maria, all of our coaches, and our very talented students for sharing their time and creativity with us!

The 2023-24 Bush Hill Odyessy Teams are:

  • 1st grade team coached by Melissa Laird and Curtis Zufelt: Sadie Laird, Hadley Wilson, Trevor Reardon, Kaysen Cerha, and Conor Zufelt
  • 2nd grade team coached by Julie Miles: Ashley Corker, Max Bryson, Zachary Kranz, Ruby Robbins, and Layla Boraey
  • 3rd/4th grade team coached by Erin Nelson and Jennifer Garlington: Chloe Fleshman, Audrey Garlington, Issac Nelson, Leo Nelson, Isabella Sanders, Isaac Suarez, and Amelia Zufelt
  • 4th grade team coached by Maria Mlynar: Madeline Smith, Ella Ruf, Claire Toth, Ruth Burris, Matilda Duffy, Tobbias Laird, and Beau Spiro
  • 4th/5th grade team coached by Sarah Blake: Annette Blake, Siddaarth Saxena, Hamza Boraey, Virginia Morgan, Anabelle Van Pool, Charlotte Gardinier, and Bradley Blake
  • 4th and 5th grade team coached by Anne Bynes and Susan Nightingale: Lillie Nightingale, Emma Davis, Violet Robbins, Bethania Solomon, and Jacob Fritz
  • 5th and 6th grade team coached by Jen and Eric Steiner: Ashton Garlington, London Steiner, Lucy Shuman, David Steiner, Everett Garlington
  • 5th and 6th grade team coached by Stephanie See and Heidi Hess: Finn Gilkes, Mark See, Ryan Boriso, Elisa del Mundo, Ellie Shanks, and Aaron Ruf

We also want to congratulated our 5th and 6th grade team coached by Stephanie See and Heidi Hess. Students Finn, Mark, Ryan, Elisa, Ellie, and Aaron will be headed to the Odyessy of the Mind State Tournament which will be held at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg, Virginia on Saturday, April 6th. We are so excited for you!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Duffy, Principal

Community Night

Community Night is now on Thursday, April 11. We are looking for families who would like to represent a place of importance to you by hosting a table, preparing a dish to sample, or providing an experience, please fill out this form. Thank you!

Attendance Matters

Make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning. But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent.

From FCPS Family Engagement Survey Now Open!

We encourage all parents/caregivers to participate in FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey. Our survey partner, K12 Insight, emailed a link to families on Sunday, March 3. Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your child's school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

The survey is available in 10 languages. Parents/caregivers may stop by a school to fill out a paper survey or for support with completing the survey online. Please check your email for the survey invitation or access the survey link on the Family Engagement Survey webpage.

New Regulation on Meditation and Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed a regulation to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. Regulation 1502 provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are designated areas within a school or on school premises for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact their student’s school regarding accommodations. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

🎤 Help Minimize the Impact of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County public schools will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training and learn about support services available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6 to 12. Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

🥁 Browse Summer Camps and Learning Programs

Have you made summer plans for your child yet? Are you looking for a camp for your child with special needs?

The Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

FCPS Summer Camp Offerings

Registration is now open for many summer camps and learning opportunities offered by FCPS for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Visit these sites for more information:

Find session dates and registration links and deadlines on the FCPS summer programs webpage.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with some school dismissals, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

National Women’s History Month

Every year, March is designated as Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions to American history. Bush Hill Updates - Tuesday, March 5, 2024

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

At Bush Hill, we believe in fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment where students are exposed to different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Throughout the year, we celebrate and learn about various holidays and awareness months through various engaging activities.

Here are a few examples of how we incorporate inclusivity into our community:

  • Holidays: We acknowledge and celebrate major holidays observed by various cultures within our school community. This allows for cultural exchange and fosters respect for diverse traditions. We do this through activities like classroom discussions, cultural presentations led by students or families, and readings of diverse children's books.
  • Awareness Months: We also dedicate time to recognizing and learning about important awareness months. This allows us to raise awareness about different causes and social issues, fostering empathy and understanding among students. We might engage in activities like guest speakers, class projects related to the theme, or creating displays highlighting the month's significance.
  • Accommodations: Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact us regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction. Should your child need an accommodation related to a cultural holiday or observance, please be sure to reach out to your child's homeroom teacher and the main office.

It's important to note that our approach is always respectful and inclusive. We strive to present information objectively and create a space for open dialogue and learning. Additionally, we encourage families to share their own traditions and experiences with their children at home, further enriching their understanding of the world around them.

In February, we celebrated and learned about Black History Month and Lunar New Year. In March, we will celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Irish American Heritage Month, and Women's History Month. We will also learn about a variety of holidays to include Maha Shivrati, Ramadan, St. Patrick's Day, Nowruz, Purim, Holi, and Easter. This week, we are also celebrating Read Across America Week. March is a BUSY month at Bush Hill!

We believe that celebrating diversity is essential for fostering a strong and inclusive school community. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home and to let us know if you have any questions or suggestions. We also encourage you to participate in Bush Hill's Community Night. This is a great opportunity for families to share traditions and celebrations that are important to them! The event is Thursday, April 11th from 6:00 - 7:15.

Thank you for your continued support.

Celebrating Read Across America Attendance Update

Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after spring break. It’s time to break that cycle.

Join us ‘The Rose Hill Players’, from Rose Hill Elementary School, for our production of  THE CLAW.

Welcome to the Rose Hill Bowling Alley, specifically inside a CLAW MACHINE that has not been turned on in a long time. Our narrator, CLAW, introduces us to two best friends: a cow plush named DOT and a stuffed dragon named AIDEN. While AIDEN wishes they could leave the game, DOT loves being stuck inside, where things never change. Suddenly, all of the TOYS are tossed around inside the machine, as the claw game springs to life for the first time in ages! AIDEN is thrilled and determined to leave the game today. DOT, meanwhile, is terrified of facing the unknown. A trio of BEANIE ELDERS, eccentric FLAIR BEARS and tough MIGHTY MUTANT POWER TURTLES teach them how to embrace change & conquer the unknown, but is DOT ready? With things changing so quickly, can they manage to stay together? Or will they be separated forever?! Come join us and find out.

Performances will be held at Thomas A. Edison High School (5801 Franconia Rd. Alexandria) on Saturday, April 6th at 1pm and 6pm.  Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $5 for children, $1 for children at the matinee.

Kindergarten SY 24-25

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Bush Hill will host a kindergarten orientation on Thursday, April 25th from 6 - 7 PM.  Eligible children register throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten.  Please contact our Registrar, Ms. DePalma with questions and to set up your Kindergarten Registration appointment (703) 924-5600.  For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

P.E. News

In March, our P.E. classes will be focusing on bike safety. Some students will have the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike, while others will learn about important bike safety practices while building on their bike riding skills.  If students ride their bikes to and from school, they can use their own bikes for this unit.  Students are encouraged to bring in their own bike helmets, if they have them, to use on their designated P.E. days. This will ensure a comfortable and properly fitted helmet.  For students borrowing a helmet from the school, they will need to wear the required hair caps during the unit to maintain hygiene standards. Don't worry! Our helmets will be cleaned after each use.  If preferred, students may bring in a baseball hat or bandana from home to wear under the borrowed helmet instead of a hair cap.  Students must wear close-toed shoes to participate in the bike unit.  No crocs or sandals are allowed.  This unit will take place outside and students will be going out unless it is raining.  The morning classes could get chilly, please dress appropriately!

Should you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!  Thank you for your partnership!

P.E. News -- Bike Safety

FCPS Magnet School Programs Learn About Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet Schools

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools provide programs that enhance learning in science, technology, and performing arts.

If you are interested in sending your student to an elementary magnet school program, consider attending a school-based information night at Hunters Woods Elementary School, Bailey’s Primary Elementary School, or Bailey’s Upper Elementary School

Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.

Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Learn more about the schools, their programs, and locations.

FCPS Summer Camps & Learning Opportunities

Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools.

CTE programs are available for students currently in grades K-5 to explore STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing; and for students currently in grades 6-11 to explore CTE program areas, develop skills, and begin career exploration.

IFTA and E-IFTA are weekly arts camps for students in grades 2-11. E-IFTA is for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. IFTA allows older students to select from nearly 90 classes in art, dance, health and physical education, music, and theater. Visit the IFTA webpage or E-IFTA webpage to register.

Summer Learning

Programs are also available for high school students to fulfill the Economics and Personal Finance course required for graduation, earn a high school course credit through the Online Campus Program, or recover one high school course credit in the Credit Recovery Academy

A free online class for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provides FCPS middle and high school English Learners the opportunity to continue developing their academic, reading, and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher.

Find session dates, registration links, and registration deadlines on the FCPS summer programs webpage.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

SEL Screener

Fairfax County Public Schools believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. SEL helps students develop the necessary skills to succeed in various aspects of life. In FCPS, students use a tool called a "screener" to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. This screener helps them evaluate how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. Want to learn more about the screener? This webpage includes information about what the screener is, how it benefits our students, and how screener results are used to create a positive and inclusive learning environment. Learn more about SEL in FCPS.
