A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Families,

As the year 2024 draws to a close, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your continued support and partnership in your child's education. It is a privilege to work alongside you in fostering a positive and enriching learning environment for all our students.

We are excited that winter break is just around the corner! School will be closed from December 23 to January 3.

During this time, the main office will also be closed, and staff will be unavailable to respond to emails or phone calls. We are encouraging our staff to use this time to relax, recharge, and enjoy quality time with their loved ones. We hope that you will be able to do the same!

We look forward to welcoming our students back to school on January 6th, refreshed and ready for the new year!

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories.

January is Poverty Awareness Month

Each January, we observe Poverty Awareness Month, an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by the millions who struggle daily to survive and provide basic needs for themselves and their families. However, awareness alone will not solve this crisis. We must combine reflection with action — through advocacy, volunteerism, and donations — if we aim to make meaningful progress in alleviating poverty within our lifetimes.

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Families,

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! I hope you all had a wonderful time with family and friends.

As you know, FCPS has begun using the new Benchmark Advance program in grades K-6 to support literacy instruction this year. This program provides students with a comprehensive and engaging learning experience. We have completed the first two units and are on to our third! At Bush Hill, we know that families are important partners in this work, so I wanted to share two different resources that may be helpful to you and your child at home:

Family-Facing Curriculum

K-12 health, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies units. What will my child learn ? What connections can I make at home? What information can I share with a tutor? What testing should we expect this year?

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Mary Duffy

Advanced Academics

Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to the Bush Hill ES Main Office no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection.

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Family Liaison Corner SEL Screener

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

Wash Your Hands

Your Health Is In Your Hands with the Help from a Shark

As we transition into the fall and winter seasons, it's important to remind our students, staff, and families about the importance of practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. These simple practices can significantly reduce the spread of germs, particularly during the upcoming holiday season when gatherings and travel increase.

  • Wash Hands Frequently: Encourage students to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water are not readily available, provide access to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content.
  • Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Remind students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly in a wastebasket and wash their hands.
  • Avoid Touching Face: Discourage students from touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Lost & Found

Please check our overflowing Lost & Found.  Remember to label children's items so if lost, they can be rerturned.  Items not claimed by the Winter Break will be donated.  Thank you.

Please Complete Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is eligible for federal Impact Aid grants due to the federal presence in our area. The grants from these programs will become part of FCPS' general operating budget. They are critical to ensuring that students receive an excellent education. FCPS anticipates receiving approximately $3,000,000 in Impact Aid funds.

FCPS uses the survey for Federal Impact Aid to identify federally connected students. In October, the survey will be made available to FCPS families. The survey is available online through ParentVue. Families without ParentVUE can request a paper copy of the survey from their child's school. FCPS staff will process the information with the utmost confidentiality.

Below are the visual steps for a parent to get to the survey in SIS ParentVue.

Steps to Access the Survey in ParentVue Step 1: Log in to SIS ParentVue Step 2: Select the 'Online Packets' tab Step 3: From the tiles at the bottom of the page, select the 2024-2025 Federal Impact Aid Survey' Use of Impact Aid Funds

Federal Impact Aid provides revenue to local education agencies to mitigate costs of educating children in areas impacted by federal activity. The Impact Aid policy was designed to compensate local school districts for the local funding share that is reduced or eliminated because of a Federal presence that is not taxable.  School districts with federal lands, military installations, federal low-rent housing or Indian Trust land within their boundaries lose local revenues.  Impact Aid is designed to compensate school districts for this lost revenue. Impact Aid goes into the general fund and is intended to offset the costs (e.g. staff, facilities, and transportation) associated with educating military dependent children and other special groups.

A Note From Mrs. Duffy Dear Bush Hill Families, We hope this email finds you well.  We wanted to provide you with an update regarding construction that may be noticeable at the main entrance of our school. Our facilities team is currently installing a vestibule, which is a second set of doors designed to enhance security. This project is a valuable addition to our school's safety measures. We anticipate that the construction will be completed within the next few weeks. During this time, we ask for your understanding as we may experience some minor inconveniences.  Please note that any guests visiting our school during school hours should still come to Door 1 and ring the bell. Our school staff will greet them in the main office as usual. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to improve our school's safety and security. On your mark, get set, WALK & ROLL!  Get ready for the 28th annual National Walk & Roll to School Day on October 9, 2024!

Environmental benefits of walking, biking, and rolling to school

  • Walking, biking, and rolling to school encourages a healthy lifestyle that has the potential to aid in the battle against climate change.
  • Active travel modes, such as walking and biking, can replace many of the short car trips we make throughout the day – including those to school.
  • Adopting modes of active travel can simultaneously build physical activity into daily life while reducing oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions which contribute to climate change.
  • Even when considering rapid population growth in most American cities, bicycling has the potential to reduce carbon emissions more than any other alternate mode of travel.

Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help students do well in high school, college, and at work.

Before School Starts:

  • Establish regular bed time and morning routines to help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.

  • Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.

  • Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help him transition by attending your school’s open house.

  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.

  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.

  • Establish childcare arrangements.

During the school year:

  • Maintain regular bed time and morning routines to help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.

  • Talk to your child about why going to school everyday is important unless they are sick.

  • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick.

  • If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him feel comfortable and excited about learning. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.

  • When possible, avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

  • Reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you are experiencing tough times such as unstable housing, transportation or health problems.

Social Studies Basal Resources Review

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.

All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

Bike To School Day October 9th

Family Liaison Corner Social Emotional Learning SEL

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact your child’s school.

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Por favor, consulte con el proveedor de atención médica de su familia para asegurarse de que su hijo está al día con las vacunas requeridas para el año escolar 2024-25. Bush Hill’s AAP offers a continuum of advanced academic services to meet a broad range of student needs. We take a holistic approach that uses a variety of assessments to determine the level of service to match the child’s current needs.

Bush Hill will be hosting a Parent Information Session to share an overview of the:

Student Photo/Video Opt Outs

We have received questions about student photo/video opt-out choices and guidance. Here are clarifications and reminders:

  • The ‘Comprehensive’ and ‘Limited C’ opt out selections are the ones that mean that a student is opted out from photos, video, and audio being published by FCPS.
  • The ‘Commercial Use’ field in SIS refers to release of information to outside businesses and organizations. It does NOT refer to publishing photos/video/audio of a student.
  • For special education and students with disabilities: Get parent/caregiver permission before publishing photo/video/audio of students receiving these services.

For full descriptions of each opt-out choice, see the Opt Out booklet forms page 13.
